The new Colt SP901 rifle was on display at SHOT Show 2012. The SP901 is a multi-caliber rifle that easily switches between 5.56mm and .308 without tools. This rifle is just about ready to hit the civilian market, Colt tells us sometime in the spring we can expect to see it on dealers shelves.

I've been waiting for over a year now for this rifle to come out. Getting tired of waiting. My local gun shop has a LMT MWS sitting on their rack... :-/

@HunterKiller308 Agreed, this is a major game changer. I wonder what the price points are on the kits though, given that it is Colt, I suspect their .223 caliber uppers cost as much or more than other companies complete rifles.

@wye4379 idk, im no expert. but why would you want to go through all that trouble for so retro fit job when there are already good mags that work?

Yes I am aware of how an AK works....
The question was whether there was sufficient width in the mag well to accommodate an AK magazine. If so there also may be sufficient length in the 901 mag well to allow you to either rock in an AK magazine OR use some other system (see the Krebs Custom Speed Load) that would obviate the need to rock the magazine in.
Additionally I suspect that you would also change the bolt too to allow it to strip a round out to the mag, but ...

@checchia in my opinion yes, the HK417 is a nice rifle to be sure, but it is no where near as modular as the CM901 platform. the HK even uses a proprietary magizine.

@wye4379 No, it wont its an AR, not an AK. the mags go straight up into the reciver, you dont rock them in like an AK

Does anyone know if an AK mag will fit in the SP901's magwell? If so couldn't they create an adapter so that you could use AK mags (with the right upper and bolt)?
