"Rienzi" is the fourth of Wagner's operas, composed beetween 1837 and 1840. Performed for the first time at Dresden, the 20th October 1842, it was a triumph for the composer, at that time still almost unknown, who, thanks to the success, got the appointment to Kapellmeister to the Court Theather.
The opera was so successfull because, as it was one of Wagner's early operas, it showed the influence of the French Grand-Opera and his greatest representatives, Meyerbeer and Halévy.
Conductor: Hans Knappertsbusch and Wiener Philharmoniker
