At NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the fixed service structure (FSS) and rotating service structure (RSS) from Launch Pad 39B have been removed.

The FSS and RSS were designed to support the unique needs of the Space Shuttle Program. In 2009, the pad was no longer needed for the shuttle program, so it is being restructured for future use. Its new design will feature a "clean pad" for rockets to come with their own launcher, making it more versatile for a number of vehicles. The transformation also includes the refurbishment of the liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen tanks and the upgrade of about 1.3 million feet of cable. The new lightning protection system, which was in place for the October 2009 launch of Ares I-X, will remain.

  • What a shame. Will the same thing happen to 39A?

  • @OV099Challenger There are no current plans to do anything but place it in a 'care takers' status.

  • This is very sad

    );

  • @lonestarstormtrooper they will never scrap the VAB NASA builds its rockets in here they only need to scrap everything that comes from the Shuttle Era so the Shuttle Hangers and Pad B need to be scrapped so they can build the SLS and Liberty Launch Towers so they had to clean the pad off because rockets have different hookups there is no need to build a prominent launch tower because they are not working on shuttles.

  • Whats next???? The VAB????

  • End of an Era

  • So sad. Dismantling of our manned space program.

  • This is nothing but a bunch of disablement. 1. the shuttle program ended. 2. taring down one of the launch pads. 3. No big BOOM! 4. It looks like they did not sell it or donate it. If i had the money I would of bought one of the shuttles and the lunch pad. I do have the space for it I live in the middle of no ware in Iowa.

  • Tear this shit down sooner the better!

  • At least let this be a new visitor complex where it will be preserving a piece of history for many generations to see and learn about the space shuttle. The most famous icon of space travel to date.

  • Lets hope we see this as the beginning of a adventure away from earth orbit..we can do it if we want to.
