These songs all have their roots in medieval Spain, but have traveled, and updated, and now survive in cities as far-flung as Tangiers and Calcutta!

1. Hibbi zawidni qublah- Judeo/Arabic song
(Text: Yehuda Halevi of Tudela - Spanish/Hebrew poet writing in Arabic)
2. Esta muntanya - Judeo/Spanish song
3. Bailava en Tetuán - Judeo/Spanish/Arabic song
4. Una matika de ruda - Judeo/Spanish song
5. 'Extra-curricular' Latin - Venezuelan

The British/Israeli/Arabic/Irish band - Joglaresa - continue this tradition by arranging and composing their own settings of these beautiful texts according to their own tastes and experiences. They draw upon their extensive travels in North Africa, the Middle East and the Balkans, and even their own traditional music of the British Isles. The songs, kept alive through centuries of tradition in order to preserve a culture against all odds, provide a colourful and timeless kaleidoscope of Occident and Orient - songs that connect Cordoba to Calcutta, and the 12th to the 21st century.

Director Belinda Sykes - teaches medieval song at Trinity College of Music, plays oboe and shawms for various theatre companies (National Theatre ,RSC, Globe etc) and also sings with groups Oni Wytars and Ensemble Unicorn.

Filmed, by kind permission, in Manchester's Instituto Cervantes, plus excerpts from a live concert in London's Trafalgar Square - video kindly made available by the Jewish Music Institute.

Album recorded at Abbey Road Studios by Andrew Dudman, mastered by Sean Magee.
Filming in the Cervantes Institute by Max Rijavec.
Film edited by Rod Arran mostly, Belinda did a bit.
Many thanks to Rod, Max, Andy and Sean.
