Yeah, instead of making the background black, use a transparent background (it's harder to learn that way, but easy to do once you know how). That way you can set in any desired background, e.g. if you want yourself on fire while standing next to a penguin

Cut out your render/whatever from the background using magic wand or quick select or whatever. Then make the background layer invisible, and add a new layer and fill it with black and put this just above your (invisile) background layer. Then follow the rest of the instructions, and when you're done, just delete the black layer.
