@DrElmo2 there are two species of coelacanths that have been discover, the one of the shores of India or close to africa, and the other by indonesia. So that been said to answer you question, its because thats where the fish live. And I mean no disrespect when I say this, but most fisherman over at that side of the world may know how to catch fish but lack knowlegde beyond that.

@janepak It sad that these fish get caught by fisherman, but once they do there is little that they can do for them. Even if they tried to return it to deeper water the damage is already done and the fish won't survive.

So according to you, every handline fisher man, casts his line into the deep blue sea and knows exactly what he is going to catch??? Coelacanths dont live on any sea bed they live in caves 200 to 300 meters deep, Coelacanth ain't a Flounder!!!

Fish was caught by local fisherman, he did not know what it was until he brought it back to the mainland and was told that he couldn't feed his family with it, the fact that it had eggs didn't surface until they did the autopsy
