This is a drill that could be used to teach and develop a front layout. The gymnast stands on a block and then leans her hips towards the two split blocks. Holding a tight arch position, the arms 'swim' out to the side and the legs swing up as the hips contact the mat. The split between the blocks provides space for the gymnasts' head as the gymnast rolls through vertical, supported by their shoulders. The tight arch should be maintained all the way to the landing mat while trying to maintain the lifted head position. To train a connection out of the front layout, we continue the hips-first fall onto the pit mat in front of the landing mat.

***These demonstrators are still in the process of learning front layouts and have never done this drill before. The purpose of this video is to illustrate the drill (which I just made up today). The height and configuration of the mats isn't quite perfect, but I like this drill. ;)

  • Do you have any good drills for press handstands?

  • This looks so fun! Haha

  • Aha! What a good idea!

  • That is a killer way of teaching a front layout.

  • great drill.

  • Could you lover the split mats and perhaps put a wedge in front to to do it from standing or a slight jump? I really like the look of this one, apart from the chest drop at the beginning. Maybe just a lower starting block.

  • This seems really fun! I have a problem with my layout. I pike whenever i go into it i have a couple videos up of it. No matter how hard I try i can't seems to drive me heels that well. any tips?

  • awesome

  • Nice idea! I remember something similar for bent-arm backward rolls for rec kids (might have even been in Technique Mag) where two panel mats were split to make room for the head/neck.
