The Essequibo was first Dutch, then British, and since Guyana's independence it became Guyanese. It has never been Spanish nor Venezuelan. On both sides of the Essequibo one can find many villages with Dutch and English names. Guyana is a very fascinating and multi-faceted country with very hospitable and friendly people.

Guyana is the only South American country that criminalizes male homosexual relations (with penalties from two years' imprisonment and life imprisonment) The Society Against Sexual Orientation Discrimination (SASOD) has urged the government to repeal the discriminatory colonial-era law that prohibits the "travesty" in public.
