Edmonton Oilers fans went wild Sunday after days of nerve-wracking rumours proved true: Ryan Smyth is coming home.
Like the prodigal son's return, the successful trade has brought about a change of mood in the city's hockey household.
Those who held out hope are jubilant, Twitter virtually exploded with fans spreading the good news.
Many view Smyth as a kind of light at the end of a playoff-less tunnel.
"Happy to hear Ryan Smyth is a done deal. Excited for the new Oilers season," said local fan Larissa Barber on Twitter.
Fan reaction on the site was overwhelmingly positive as tweets poured in
