Sister Morphine (written by Marianne Faithfull)
performed by The Urn

Lyrics:

Here I lie in my hospital bed
Tell me, sister morphine, when are you coming round again?
Oh, I dont think I can wait that long
Oh, you see that Im not that strong

The scream of the ambulance is sounding in my ears
Tell me, sister morphine, how long have I been lying here?
What am I doing in this place?
Why does the doctor have no face?

Oh, I cant crawl across the floor
Ah, cant you see, sister morphine, Im trying to score

Well it just goes to show
Things are not what they seem
Please, sister morphine, turn my nightmares into dreams
Oh, cant you see Im fading fast?
And that this shot will be my last

Sweet cousin cocaine, lay your cool cool hand on my head
Ah, come on, sister morphine, you better make up my bed
cause you know and I know in the morning Ill be dead
Yeah, and you can sit around, yeah and you can watch all the
Clean white sheets stained red.

  • great version of a great tune!!!!!!! can anyone please tell me where i can download this album from the urn?

  • @pinkvy I´ve discovered the song from the Rolling Stone magazine: Rare Trax, Volume 4: Stones Cover Songs.

  • written by Marianne Faithfull? The original credits go to Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Marianne Faithfull - all 3 of them. They wrote it for Marianne, and later the Stones recorded this song themselves.

  • @hccaos44

There are different opinions about the fact who is the real author and there seems a dispute about this. But I think it´s not that important. But I can add Mike and Keith, if you feel better then ;).

    face book like!

  • Great!!!

  • The agreed upon by Mick Keith and Marianne version is that Mick was playing the melody around the house for a while on the piano and that Marianne wrote the lyrics one day and that she recorded it first because they all considered it more of a Marianne song and then Decca pulled it off the shelf within 72 hours of releasing it because it was not a "fitting song for a proper english lass to sing" and then the stones recorded it.

  • @WayfaringStranger309 Looking on my 3 CDs of Marianne Faithfull, I found lots of covers and rare own written songs. I thought, she started song writing a lot later. One of the CDs (1987) claims "Jagger, Faithfull, Richard (yes, in that order and "Richards" without "s" due to problems with his father) as authors of "sister morphine". You may add them, but you don't have to. :) Its your decision.
