Abdallah Helmey is the most famous Kawala players in the Middle East. The Kawala is an end-blown cane flute used in Arabic music, similar to the Nay. It is usually played in religious festivals. Abdallah Helmey has performed with many international artists including Stevie Wonder last year in France. He has also performed with Jazz legend Chick Corea, and many more. He is the most accomplished Kawala player fusing folklore with jazz.

Kawala - A flute played in Arabic and Turkish music. The "kavala" (Turkish pronunciation) originated as a shepherd's pastoral calling instrument, and because of this quality often participates in call-and-response instrumentals. It is higher in pitch then the Nay, but it can also produce a soulful, wailing sound affect.

  • @Bragko Turkey (Turkish people) are NOT Middle-Eastern. Middle-Eastern don't consider them either, nor do the Turks themselves. So technically neyzenibrahim is actually correct on his statement. just saying.
