Coming back from mountain bike rides in the "Great Trinity Forest" I usually ride up through the Bonton to get back home. On the weekends the parking lots along South Lamar are usually full of people mingling around. People sell things, drink, eat. There are usually a few folks selling food. It varies from BBQ to soul food. Some of the best you can find anywhere. Only a 3 minute bike ride between the dark river bottoms and the very animated crowd of folks that line the street.
The Bonton Neighborhood is bounded to the north by U.S. Route 175 to the west by SH 310, to the south by Donald St., and to the east by Municipal St. It is home to Turner Court, known as the Bonton Projects. The Bonton sits within the larger geographic area known as Rochester Park in South Dallas.
The Bonton is unique in Dallas. What some would call a "food desert" , there are virtually no chain restaurants, fast food places or sit down establishments. Grocery stores are even few and far between. Ignored and forgotten for decades an unique culture exists there that the rest of Dallas knows nothing about.
This particular area is bisected by two train tracks. On a friday night in July 2011, an 18 wheeler tractor trailer tried to beat a train at the level crossing shown in the video on Lamar in the Bonton. The train hit the truck, slicing the trailer in half. The trailer was carrying a full load of Vizio HDTVs. Many of the tvs walked away from the scene never to be seen again. A handful arrests were made as a result. As of August 2011, the scene of the accident has still not been completely cleaned up. Pieces of trailer, HDTV boxes and pallets still litter the siding.

Most of those people have been hanging out there many years. Laid back.
