This short animation helps show the maximum symmetric subsets of one "perfect set" of a disk (one based on Fermat's spiral). It is meant to be shown in looping mode.

If the disk has unit area, the perfect set (the unrotating dark half of the yin-yang symbol) has area 1/2. The maximum symmetric subsets have an area of 1/4 and are the darkest areas formed by the two overlapping spiral areas. Each frame of the animation was generated using a different reflection symmetry of the disk.

  • What an elegant observation (about area of symmetric subsets), and what a nice piece of matheamtics! :-)
