A few clips from New Years Eve in Reykjavík. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else for new years. Every family in Reykjavík buys a shopping bag or two of fireworks and then thousands gather in many hotspots around the city and fire up a few tons of explosives in close proximity of each other.

Sales from fireworks the week before new years manages alone to finance the emergency rescue crews of Iceland. So it's easy to spend loads of money on fireworks as one is helping a good cause.

  • Looks awesome!

I want to ask you something about reykjavik, as Im going there in october on holidays.

Im only going to be there for a few days, and one of the things I'd love to see there are the Northern Lights. Is there any real chance of seeing them in reykjavik at that time of the year- or are they only visible further north in the country??

  • I this MrSigurdur meant to say 'clothes'. :)

Regarding the northern ligthts then they can be seen anywhere. However if you are standing in the middle of the well lit city you will hardly see anything except the strongest lights.

But even if you get out of the city there are good odds are you will not see it. We have no way of knowing when they will appear as it is connected to solar activity and we cannot predict those. Then it may be cloudy and so on. So don't trust on seeing them.

  • You can see the northern lights anywhere in Iceland. Your best chance to see them is if it's dark outside and you're not in the city (since the light pollution "hides" them from you (like when you're trying to see stars), it's freezing cold outside, at certain times of the year (like @JonGretarB told you) and the sky is clear. I really hope you'll be able to see them. October isn't very cold so I'm not sure if it's the best time of the year to see them but the experts know what they're doing.:-)

  • Thanks for the news on the auroura.

My cousin went to reykjavik a couple of years ago, and he saw them by chance one night- faintly in the sky over the city itself. He was amazed!!

There are "northern lights tours" offering people chances to see them- you get driven to a place at a certin time of the year, where auroura activity is high, but not definite. Im gonna be going to places like Vik, and the blue lagoon, so hopefully the lights will be somewhere in the sky somewhere. Cant wait!

  • i'm from iceland it is were cold so you should taka mutch close with you
