Another Avionics Powerhouse Gets Serious About GA Glass

The Glass Panel game is a popular one... and filled with extremely aggressive competitors with exciting products... but with nearly all the cards on the table, EFIS-wise, all eyes turn to Honeywell/Bendix-King... and the "other shoe" that they are about to drop. With Industry innovators like Avidyne, Chelton and Garmin in the competition and some novel new players like Aspen coming hot and heavy on to the scene, Honeywell has a tough road ahead... but then again, they ARE Honeywell.

The Aero-TV two-part look into the Honeywell Glass Panel equation starts with a good look at the KFD 840 (with the equally intriguing KSN 770 to follow). The KFD 840 Primary Flight Display offers Part 23 piston aircraft an 8.4" display including ADI, Air Data, and HSI display. Integrated ADC and AHRS are included. The KFD 840 is designed to be 'an affordable replacement option for all the analog instruments in the steam gauge “six pack.” It can complement other systems or be used as a standalone Primary Flight Display for Bendix/King’s new line of avionics including the similarly styled KSN 770 Next Generation GPS/NAV/COMM. It is designed to integrate with common autopilots including the Bendix/King KFC line and common Nav and GPS systems including all KSN and KLN products.

Other features include:
• Large, 8.4-inch LCD fits easily into the space traditionally occupied by steam gauges
• Internal Air Data Attitude Heading Reference System (ADAHRS) with remote magnetometer
• Weight & Balance and Checklist
• Optional engine instrument monitoring
• Full TSO on display and the ADAHRS subsystem
• Standard interface to KAP-140, KFC-150/200/225 Autopilots
• Interface to Nav systems: KX-155/165, Garmin GNS-430/530/SL30
• Checklist, Weight and Balance utility
• Optional external battery backup
• Architecture for future engine monitoring features
• Preliminary dimensions for the KFD 840 are 8.0"W x 6.75"H x 5.0"D.

  • So about that weight and balance page. What if you are flying a somewhat rare bird like a twin commander or an Aerostar. How would you go by getting a page for those? I doubt they have pages for every GA aircraft ever made.
