  • Arc Light was a ground directed radar bombing program using an AN/MSQ-77 automatic tracking radar system. The 77 used an analog vacuum tube computer to calculate backward to the release point and the aircraft would have to fly strait and level being given left right tone commands from the radar site and then a steady tone would come on and when it stopped the bombardier would release the payload. Quite accurate but the flight crew didn't like to fly strait and level in war. Canpt blame them.

  • @repalmore ........ Very interesting on the radar bombing system. I remember that we in combat photo trained at Lowry AFB. And as I remember, that's also where the Bomb-Nav tech guys and Navigators got their training. I was just back in Denver for business, and was sorta' sad to see that the East end, and what used to be Lowry, is pretty much gone. March AFB in Riverside CA has a B52. I'm not sure which model, but I really need to visit the museum again.

  • I was there with you in 67 and again 69, I loaded the bombs for arc lite, 12 on12 off 6 days a week. crew chief 500 lbs.

  • @darkcloudbmc ........ I'll never forget the sign at the air terminal at Anderson AFB... and reading it as we de-planned and entered the terminal....... "Guam Is Good" by order of the base commander! :-) Man, I'm glad I only did that one 6month TDY. That was mentally one of the most difficult periods in my short AF career! Oddly, I wish I'd extended on my last tour in SEA! I should've extended. But instead, I thought coming back to "The World" would be great. Oh well.

  • Well done!

  • @380AMS , thanks for stopping by. I'm in SoCal now; have been for many years. I'm still amazed at how many hits this video has received. It's certainly not the best video, but for some reason, maybe because of the amatuer production of it all, it's pulled up allot of new contacts from vets like you. My original 8mm film is about 20 minutes or so. I need to get it "re-transfered" at a higher quality level, and post the longer versions that include my tour of the island with buddies.

  • @Seymour1511 No, you served 2 years in the state pen for chasing little boys!

  • Nice Video. I served on Guam 72-73 at the Naval Facility at the northern tip. My barracks was at Naval Communication Station not far from Andersen AFB. I was there when the build up was underway for the Christmas '72 bombing campaign -- Operation Linebacker II -- that effectively brought the North Vietnamese to the table to end the war.

  • @a3780 Actually, most of them were P&W , some of them were subcontracted & built by Ford Motor Co.
