  • Here's what's evident right from the start: a contralto's voice is in the natural range of the aria, so she sounds natural and can sing with a lot of flexibility. Marijana's range from low e below middle C (the bottom of the alto range) to a high, shimmering f-sharp (the top of the alto range) all within seconds, was really stunning and exciting. Mehta's comparative range was small (octave and a half, typical for a countertenor) so his timbre had less color and variance.
