This segment speaks of a migration towards the South as opposed to away from it. This migration was primarily from the East coast to the South. Dr. Padgett then goes on to state that after the freeing of slaves and the reconstruction era there were about 5 million African Americans in the United States in which most of them lived in the South.

AFTER THE RECONSTRUCTION PERIOD 5 million blacks were living in the states. 90% lived in the south MANY BAD THING BEGAN TO HAPPEN WHICH CAUSED NUMEROUS BLACKS TO LEAVE THE SOUTH AND HEAD WEST ESTABLISHING all-black town like Houston this was called the Exodusters Migration. 60,000 blacks left Nashville for the west, this was the largest exodusters migration.

During the Reconstruction period, 99 percent of the former slaves still lived in the south. However, they began to migrate to the north and west and est other black cities.

"free towns" were founded by African Americans in that area of the south. at the end of this period the African Americans moved westward in Texas and Oklahoma -- this was called the exodus movement.

Dr. Padgett stated that slavery ended and we went into a period of reconstruction. There were about 99% of blacks still living in the south. There were about 5 million blacks in the united states and most were in the south. The Extrodustrious Migration was when the blacks left parts of the south and moved west.
