After 12 years as the International Atomic Energy Agency's chief, Mohammed El Baradei is leaving the UN organisation.

From his first major challenge after taking office - investigating into whether Saddam Hussein, the former president of Iraq, had a nuclear programme or not - to more recent moves to take on Iran's controversial nuclear programme, the jury is out on whether El Baradei has made the world a safer place.

Mohammed Vall reports on the battles faced by the nobel peace prize-winning chief during his time in office.

  • I hope that news in Egyptian local news are true that he plans to run for President in 2011. A person of that caliber will cause all sorts of trouble to Mubarak and his sons, who will find it hard to tarnish his reputation or put him in jail, like they did with Ayman Nur. If he contributes to making Egypt more democratic, that will definitely lead to a more peaceful Middle East.

  • i hope he will be the next president of egypt

  • فخورين بك يا دكتور ونعرف قدرك ونحترم فى كل البلاد العربيه

  • Vote for Mohammed Al Baradei - We support him for to be President of EGYPT in 2011

  • El Baradei had one of the hardest jobs in the world. And I think that he did it in a balanced and honest way. I respect him and regret to see him go. I hope I can say at least half of this for the next guy.

  • Uh oh, the IAEA has been one of the few sources of (sometimes) objective analysis of Iran - too bad this article didn't mention why El Baradai is stepping down, or who is stepping up. The UN as a whole and especially the "security" council, has made it clear that their personal agenda trumps honest discourse.

  • The new demands being made by the IAEA towards Iran were issued by whom? Which person, Mohammed El Baradei the IAEA official that was forced out or was the statement made by someone else? Tick tick tick

  • its great that we can comment on al-jaseera site, the americans dont like a strong leader they want a waek person they are against al baradei just like they where against potros potros gali.

  • It seems that a good man has been pushed out by exterior influences that have their sights on Iran. I commend Mohammed El Baradei for standing up to The Bush Administration and proving what we all suspected, that Iraq had NO weapons of mass destruction and Iran was pursuing nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

His presence will be missed now that the IAEA has come under the influence of the US & Israel. It is a very bad development for World Peace.
