"For truth be told, we both know who will be behind my death, but dare not call his name. Not just my life, but your too depends on it." Lasantha Wickramatunga

This week Amos Roberts reports from Sri Lanka, where the feared Tamil Tigers are surrounded in small pocket of the country and the government is moving in for the kill.

The 25 year old war against the Tigers has seen thousands killed and now an estimated 150,000 civilians are trapped in the middle of this brutal conflict.

As Roberts reports, no independent journalists are allowed near the war zone and those who dare criticise the government or the military are either detained or murdered by shadowy forces.

On air: 15th March 2009

  • IF the LTTE kept their arms down nothing like the above would have happened!....

  • Fuck both Ltte n mahinda ...both r terrorists ... talking abt a fukin democracy ... "Thts the way we want it "wow...

  • This is anothers story for SBS. They are counting the stories. this is not a responsible reporting. SBS will telecast any crap. if u have any doubt what im saying ask from any australian or from anyone who lives in australia. dont take this serious. as i said before SBS have add another story into its one billion stories by this crap.

  • oh my god what a crucial rude political leaders sinhalese have shit

  • Good to hear that you're against the war, so am I. Any kind of truthful reporting helps, especially reporting by unbiased international media. Attacks on civilians are reported whether they are carried out by the LTTE or the SL gov. I agree with you that reporting should be fair- in the case of SL, it can only be fair if it is by unbiased western media. If there are attrocities commited they need to be brought to light. 99%of civilians killed so far have ben tamils.

  • Dude you didnt get my point. I am against war in any way. But do you think this kind of reporting helps? I have never seen reports/documentaries on the child soldiers and suicide bombings the ltte does. And you think that sinhala and muslim people do or did not die because of war. Why talk only about tamil deaths when they should be fair reporting to show that war is hell on everyone.

  • They are not praising the LTTE. They condemn bot parties. Sri Lankan gov is acepted as the legitimate of the country and so the rest of the world expects a higher standard. Almost all of the people illed in the ethnic conflicts have been tamils. Currently the gov is killing tamils at a rate of more than 100 per day! They are targetted directly. SBS, BBC, Times, CNN, etc are massive news orgs.. they dont gain anything from SL. SL is a tiny insigificant blip as far as the world is concerned.

  • sbs sucks , taking terrorist side ,

we wont let any fuck heads seperate our mother land ,

few years ago thousands of sinhalese youth were killed by the system , that was a comunist uprising , dosent matter tamil or sinhalese , u go against the system at your own risk

  • The truth is these kinds of journalists dont care about who dies and who doesnt. all they care about is big chunks of money and ratings. They need wars/conflicts to be there in the world. And all they do is to create more conflict/ drift between the parties involved. This is the case with most NGOs too. People who donate needs to be aware of what they really do and what happens with their money.
