NICTA, together with the NaDa partners are developing ways to take advantage of the ever increasing capabilities of set-top boxes and home gateways to move functionality out of the data centres by virtualising the set-top boxes and connecting them via a managed P2P network. NICTA will specifically develop distributed schemes which power down individual set-top boxes when not in use by their owners, while maintaining a high quality user experience. By utilising NICTA's proposed peer-to-peer energy-aware scheme to share content with other users, service delivery providers can lower their operational energy costs and environmental footprint.
