Album Review : Alopecia by Why?

Released in 2008 on Anticon records.

Why? is like Anticons experimental indie rock band. Most of their back catalogue wasn't that spectacular, but Alopecia is awesome.

It's definitely a very unique listen. It's blurs the lines between intellectual raps and drug induced rambling. Yoni Wolf has a very endearing half sung, nasal flow. He's sounds tired and earnest. The band make dream based indie rock.

Lots of hipster references, movie references, childhood references and probably a whole bunch of other ones that went right over my head.

It's hard to explain Why?. It's the kind of music that maybe the only subconscious part of your brain understands.

Fans of avant garde rap, quirky indie rock might appreciate this. It's not as snobby as I make it out to be.

hmmm - doesn't sound bad. but one thing i get really nervous about is when groups mix "hip hop sounds" with rock. these songs don't really sound at all hip hop but why is the band on anticon? are there breakbeats on some songs or something? he doesn't ever rap, does he (please tell me he doesn't)? nice review! reminds me to renew my rapidshare subscription hehe.

Fear not young, Alex. There are no break beats, but just some indie rock imitation beats. Yoni Wolf has a free verse, rap /spoken word/ half sung flow. It's very unique. Why? is like a hip hop band you listen to in dreams or in comas. I love this album. It's one of those albums that can trigger sadness, confusion and laughter.

btw another album that is closley related to this is Modest Mouse the moon and antartica<3 very similar in music quality and sound... great! and if you're into philosophical songs about death and religion then Brand new the devil and god are raging inside me are another good album that is related to this album!!!

@jexicomexico Eskimo snow is slowly growing on me. I have a taste for old folk indie... i really really like "on rose walk avenue" the lyrics are about right. but I just love the whole mix of every instrument, sounds very integrated. and it works wonders for my ears. but Eskimo snow is a little different quality. can't wait to hear more from them.

this album is amazing!!! it's really a great piece of art! I really love indie music like modest mouse, but this album storyline is very very good!!! my faves are brooks and waxing and well i love the whole album! it's really good!!!! with hip hop beats, and some classic music incorporated with folk indie, master mix! and the vocals in Simeons dilemma is soo amazing!
