  • I'm listening to the short Brahms piano pieces on YouTube to fill in the gaps of the ones I don't know, and the performance comparisons can be fascinating. Just heard Gould play this--beautifully, but it was hard for me to make sense of the piece. Then Kempff, and suddenly the rhythmic structure is clear. Gould's performace might be better appreciated by listeners who already know the piece, which I didn't; Kempff's performance offers a valuable lesson in communicating the music more directly.
