The ONLY Mig-23 Flogger flying in the United States is based out of New Castle, DE. It made an appearance at the DEANG 60th anniversary airshow held at the airport. The pilot was limited to passes at 900 feet or above due to FAA regulations, but just seeing and hearing one made it worthwhile. This clip shows the takeoff and shutting down.

  • Is it true the MiG 23 is as good as an F16?

  • @dafty97 Good is a relative term. Like BitnikGr mentioned, a comparison between a MiG-23 and an F-16A is different than a MiG-23 and an F-16CJ. The Flogger was designed as an interceptor (much like the F-104) while the F-16 was a clear weather dogfighter. Both have evolved during their lives but their roots still determine how "multi" their roles can be.

  • 0:54 VTEC just kicked in yo

  • @intertr0ns Hahahahaahahah

  • When the afterburner ignites you can see the aircraft literally being punched forward!

It's said that it can go as fast as 900kts at very low altitudes and be the fastest single engine fighter, which is unbelievable for it's age...!

    Superb vid of this aircraft!

  • @dafty97

2nd example: Soviet MiG-23 (late production, fully equipped) should have an edge over Pakistani F-16, but several of them were shot down during the Soviet Afghanistan war, after straying into Pakistani airspace.

  • @dafty97

1st example: US F-16 (late production, fully equipped) should be vastly superior to Iraqi MiG-23 (export versions with downgraded avionics and equipment), however during the 1991 Gulf War both were equally unable to score an air-to-air-victory, though not for the lack of trying: for instance, USAF F-16 fired 36 Sidewinders, without scoring a hit!

  • @dafty97

depends on which MiG-23 against which F-16.

Both were produced in uncountable variants over decades, and exported widely, with each client purchasing different capabilities.

A figher aircraft is a system (containing several subsystems, the most important of them being the pilot) within a system - the national anti-aircraft defense, including GCI, AWACS, other aircraft, SAM, etc.

  • @dafty97 not really, the Iraqi air force was massacred by the Iranians when they used this shit plane, also the jew air force massacred the Syrians when they used this plane

they ONLY success was against South African Mirage F1 and that was a draw because the south africans where running out of supplies because of the embargo

  • @SemperApollo But would an aviation expert say the MiG 23 is a good plane its self or not? To be honest it looks ugly and heavy, but i do realise you cant judge a book by its cover.

I bought a dvd called Wings of the Red Star which stated that the Soviets never built a plane that was anything less than perfect for what it was designed for.

  • @dafty97 No. The Mig 23 is comparable to the F-4 Phantom.

  • @dafty97 About maneuverability, I doubt it. About top speed and ceiling, sure. Also, much more stable than the F-16 aerodynamically. The 23 requires less training than the 16.

  • She just about blew my computer's speakers!
