The Daily Vinyl video #23: "Stagnation" by Genesis (w/ Peter Gabriel). Now that GENESIS has been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, check out a song from their 1970 masterpiece "Tresspass". This is a VERY different GENESIS. This is before Phil Collins was the singer. Before Phil even was the drummer! ("What? Phil Collins wasn't the original drummer?" A: Nope.)

They were five 20-year-olds exploring their 12-string guitars and early keyboards. Peter Gabriel was the lead singer and his voice is as strong as ever! "Stagnation" is the first song on Side 2 of their 2nd full-length album called "Trespass." This album is magical. It has recently been remixed and released on CD w/ a 5-1 DVD mix. More magic. It was very tempting to go crazy with the special effects because this song has so many moods throughout. Sometimes just ducks being fed didn't feel like enough. Although, as you will see, I used some tasty-full-ness.

Oh, and don't wait for a sing-along chorus. It's not a pop song. Although the closing instrumental melody starting around 7:23 has been a mainstay in medleys (specifically "I Know What I Like") even up 'til their reunion tour in 2007.

I hope you enjoy the video and maybe appreciate this song from a band with a deep and fascinating history.

  • Bellissimo! :D

  • that was awesome! thanks for the smiles!

  • great post !

and music in vinyl is much better !!

    cheers!

  • Genesis was awesome before that no talent ass hat took it mainstream and dumbed down the music. You know who I speak of...that Collins guy...

  • This album still goes and remains the Testament of Early-Genesis.

Tough every new album became a consequence of Rebirth and Evolution ,in styles

in lyrics , in instruments, in knowledge...as it should be.

    Ty for share =)

  • @LileighWhiteLilith -"...she gonna lead you right!" When I think of all the great musicians and artistry I've been denied over my teenage years, (long ago) because some radio exec making decisions to play only proven winners and under three minutes thought it best, I just want to cry! Here in LA we had Stonetrek and Seventh Day. I stopped listening to radio and never went back.
