44th Entry AATS - RAF Bircham Newton -1962

This film commemorates the expedition of members of the 44th Entry, Royal Air Force Administrative Apprentice Training School, R.A.F. Bircham Newton who canoed from Fort William to Inverness in March 1962.
The expedition was ably led by Sergeant Bob Wise assisted by Sergeant Brian Hennerly and Sergeant Kershaw.

The Apprentice members of the expedition were:
Gordon "Jock" Gourdie
George Metcalf
Geoff "Spud" Roberts
David "Lofty" Squire
John "Jock" Wells
Harry "Les" Westray
Doug Wright

The journey to Fort William took 2 days, with an overnight stop in transit billets at RAF Ouston, in Northumbria (there were no motorways in those days)
The expedition took 5 days, camping on the banks of the Caledonian Canal and the shores of Loch Ness. The weather was so good that on the banks of Loch Ness we slept without tents.
The return journey to Bircham Newton took another 2 days.
