Great Estonian singer Mati Palm (bass) singing Attila aria from Verdi's Attila.
Mati Palm was born on January 13, 1942 in Tallinn and has studied at Tallinn Conservatoire with Jenny Siimon (1962--1968), Moscow Conservatoire in the class of prof. Hugo Dietz (1972--1973) and La scuola di canto alla Scala (Italy) with Renato Carosio (1974--76). Since 1976 until presently Mati Palm works at the Vocal Department of Estonian Academy of Music, since 1995 as a professor and in 1995--2000 as the head of department. Mati Palm is a soloist of the Estonian National Opera since 1969.
Mati Palm's artistic qualities and wide range of his vocal have enabled him to perform different stage characters -- altogether more than 60 roles: Sarastro and Bartolo (Mozart Zauberflöte and Le nozze di Figaro), Basilio (Rossini Sevilla habemeajaja), Filippo, Attila, De Silva, Zaccaria (Verdi Don Carlo, Attila, Ernani, Nabucco), Mefistofeles (Boito Mefistofeles), Escamillo (Bizet Carmen), Kaspar (Weber Der Freischütz), Hollandlane (Wagner Der Fliegende Holländer), Don Quijote (Massenet Don Quijote), Gremin and René (Tshaikovski Yevgeni Onegin and Jolanthe), Boriss and Pimen (Mussorgski Boriss Godunov), Ivan Hovansky, Dossifei (Mussorgski Hovantshtshina), etc.
Mati Palm's repertoire includes more than 50 solo parts from different oratorios.
Mati Palm has an extensive repertoire of chamber music from different folk songs and classical vocal cycles to contemporary music. His special mission has been to promote Estonian chamber music. Several contemporary Estonian composers have dedicated vocal cycles to Mati Palm: Alo Põldmäe's "Three songs with flute quartet", Ester Mägi's "Haikus for voice and harp", Raimo Kangro's "Five songs", etc. Mati Palm has performed in many opera houses around the world and in more than hundred concerts halls in dozens of countries. He has conducted master classes in many countries and participated in the work of international juries. Mati Palm has participated in the recording of 10 CDs. His solo CD with Estonian and Italian music was released recently.
