You can notice that the italian navy force (officially: ‘Marina Militare’) uses tha same flag with a little difference: in the navy the venitian lion handle a sword instead of the holy bible (in the civilian navy flag) ! (excuse me for my basic English)

This is the current flag used in my country (italy) for the mercantile and leisure navy activities

Its components are: italian national flag with four emblems standing right in the middle (symbolising the four mid-aged maritims republics; the emblems stand for (clockwise) : Venezia, Genova, Amalfi, Pisa.
