this is simple:
75x + 55x = 520
130x =520
x = 520/130
x = 4
just like NoNamesOnMe said, only written in algebra-ic way.

Easier way of doing this - just add the two numbers (55 and 75) to get 130, which is how many miles they can travel in an hour. 520/130 = 4.
