***This is the COMPLETE composition, not just an excerpt***

Having recently been told that Sibelius' great tone poem, "Night Ride and Sunrise", was not posted, in its complete form, on YouTube, I immediately pulled out my collection of Sibelius and uploaded it. I know I have a version conducted by Berglund (in my humble opinion, one of the great Sibelius interpreters) but I have been unable to find it; I will upload that when I do locate it.

Here, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra led by Eugen Jochum (a conductor I've no experience with but who was apparently quite accomplished), perform the tone poem as I believe it was intended to be performed. My previous post of the piece (by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and led by up-and-coming Finnish conductor Pietari Inkinen) is the version that I prefer, but it is performed at a slower tempo than what (I believe) Sibelius had intended for the piece. Regardless, Sibelius is exceptional to hear no matter what...

Jochum, from what I could discover, was a German born pianist, organist and conductor, conducting mainly for Deutsche Grammophon (so far as recordings go). From what I heard in this piece, he certainly understood Sibelius and I will seek out other offerings by him.

Enjoy!

  • Incidentally, I see that three of the four "Kuolema" pieces (Valse Triste & Scene with Cranes from Op. 44 & Valse Romantique from Op. 62) are on YouTube. However, no one's posted Canzonetta (Op. 62a). I've been holding off linking the "Kuolema" music to the Jean Sibelius Facebook group until Canzonetta's been downloaded. Do you have it on disc? I have the Rozdestvensky/Leningrad Philmarmonic recording on an Angel LP, but no means for getting it online.

  • I do have the Canzonetta. It's on the Inkinen disc that I used for the Night Ride. I'll work on that and post it.

How do I find your Sibelius facebook group? I'm on facebook but I've not really looked in on the groups there...

    Thanks. Best,

    Billy

  • Interesting interpretation, billystewart4! I haven't sorted through my collection of Sibelius LPs (I have nothing on CD--yet) since I moved, but I believe the version I have is Sargent/BBC Symphony Orchestra (if that sounds right). I'm not used to hearing the opening played so slowly, but then it provides a greater contrast to the tempo of the rest of the "Nightride" section.

  • Definitely a different feel. I like this, but I do prefer the slower tempo throughout as offered by Berglund and Inkinen.

    Best,

    Billy

  • A sluggish introduction followed by crazed galloping. The horse sure can run in this version. Dramatic contrast.

  • This is great, thanks for sharing. Jochum is one of my favorite conductors. His recordings of Bruckner are something out of this world.

  • YouTube won't let me post a URL, but the group is called "Jean Sibelius" (it's the big one, over 400 members). Try keying the group name into the "Search Groups" box when you hit the "Groups" icon.
