Built in an afternoon with scrap materials and hand tools. The cylinder and valve body are aluminum, the piston is steel rod, coat hanger for a crankshaft and the flywheel is a block of wood filed into a spool and wrapped with copper wire for weight. This is probably as crude as you can make an engine and still have it run decent. It will run on very little air, but because of the flexibility in the crankshaft it runs best at low RPMs.

  • You can find plans by searching "oscillating steam engine plans" in google. Its the first link. They have a nice set of free plans posted for a very similar but slightly better made engine of this type.
