This is the class review for the first of three lessons in The Jam Cellar's Tap for Swing Dancers series taught 12/2/08. We welcome back Heidi Schultz from Joy Of Motion, who taught two segments in our Roots & Offshoots series.
Rhythmic tap dancing is traceable to Africa, Ireland, Spain, and England, amongst other places, but was fully codified and developed as an art form beginning in the 1830s in New York City.
Since then, this vernacular dance has been an important expression of the fluidity, energy, and spontaneity of hot jazz and big-band swing music, and their antecedents. For a while, many big-band shows had tap routines as part of the performance.
If you want more information on this art form and on what Heidi does, visit http://www.joyofmotion.org and click on the "Faculty" hyperlink at the bottom of the home page.
The Jam Cellar is a world-reknowned weekly swing dance party held in a posh, turn of the century mansion in Northwest Washington, DC on Tuesday nights.
