Some examples of Santana Lotus era licks, with looped rhythm chords in the background with a metronome. Excerpts from single take improvisations as usual.

Based on the solo from "Samba Pa Ti" written by Carlos Santana.

  • Hi. The sound you get from that Lp and boogie are identical. I always wanted a mk 1 because of that Welcome/Lotus sound but I understand you have to get the amp to really high volumes to get that unique sustain and tone. Actually, I was under the impression Carlos put an early triangle big muff in front to get that sound at reasonable levels without blowing his eardrums.

Also, what speaker does yours have, please? regards. Jeff

  • @SHEMAMAN He may have, you know, sometimes on Lotus it sounds like it can't just be the amp alone. But who knows for sure. His gear was extremely modified anyway so it could be. I use a pro co rat for this tone! I'm sure it's a celestion black shadow but I can't check because I am not in the same country as my Boogie at the moment! Anyway I found if I combine boogie with LP and Rat and use the correct touch-approach it sounds Lotus-ish. Although I don't play this shitty anymore. Was years ago!

  • Why are there not more comment on this? It's awesome. I have a humble question. How did you get to playing like that? Did you just cover Santana and practice playing on the dorian? Or did you actual play along to Jazz tracks like Santana used to?

  • Sorry dude I didn't login to this account for awhile. Thanks a lot. Uh I don't know what a dorian is, I just hear something or think it and play it. Well I play all kinds of stuff but I also played Santana a lot yeah. I take care to note the different nuances and tones in different guitar voices and the licks used to create that voice. That's about it really. Although this is old and scruffy now.

  • Sounds great! I've got an original Boogie Mark I myself, and it's a beautiful amp.. what kind of speaker did you use? Did you plug straight into the amp?

  • Thanks. Well, the speaker is just the stock speaker in the Mark 1. A black shadow of some sort. I just go through a Pro Co Rat actually into the amp to get the gain and some bonus tone, they combine nicely together (rat & amp), but you can get more or less same tone without the rat using the amp gain.

  • Well, I bought a boogie mark 1 re-issue and it has a stock eV black shadow. I used it on the 60 watt setting at a jam but it was a bit unresponsive in the treble frequencies with regards that great lotus sound. It really should stay on the 100 watt setting to give that extra punch and dynamics. Thanks again for your inspiration.

  • great

  • Very near the original tone of Carlos during that time. Excellent.Jeff Makor

  • Reminds me of Samba Pa Ti on caffeine.

    Haha..

Sorry no offence here you really play beautifully!!! ,)

  • :-)
