The flourmill in Leros Mproutzi:
Around 1900 the businessman / merchant Antonios Z. Kastis recognizing the needs of Lerians for flour, he builds the building cluster of the flourmill in Mproutzi in an area of 750 square metres. A man that could not settle for second best, A Kastis travels then to Smyrni -- which was an international city at the time -- and seeks to equip his flourmill with machinery of the latest technology that are manufactured by a French-Swiss company. A diesel engine of internal combustion provides the necessary power to the mill this is a pioneering technology for its time.
From all over the Aegean boats arrive to unload their wheat, to be converted to flour. The flourmill seized its operation in 1955 and for more than 50 years it remained a sad ruin in Mproutzi of Agia Marina, Leros. In the year 2000 the grandson of Antonis Kastis, decides to renovate the mill and restore it to its former glory. After an intense effort and eight years later he created a multipurpose exhibition area, renovating and maintaining all of the mills machinery, equipment and burrstones.
Today the visitor may enjoy these as well as a photographic homage to the Leros of old, a collection of great importance to the history of the place. A video showing how the flourmill functioned can be seen on the 1st floor. The exhibition area is available for any kind of artistic creation or exchibition. A wonderful café, Mproutzi gives the opportunity to any visitor to enjoy a beverage in this beautiful space.
