Hog Town gets down at Southern Spirit open house (April 2010) The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina hosted the open house and ribbon cutting ceremony at Southern Spirit community building and Boys & Girls Club on Saturday, April 10, 2010. It is an honor to be here today for this historical occasion, declared Tribal Chairman Purnell Swett as he imparted his greeting s to those in attendance. Im sure it will be put to good use serving our people in many ways now and in the future. The Southern Spirit Boys & Girls Club and Community Center is a 9,000 square foot, drug free facility in which the surrounding community will be able to utilize for various activities and functions along with carrying out the daily functions and operations of a Boys & Girls Club. We have experienced countless hardships but we are people who are determined, commented District 2 Representative Councilor Sharon Hunt, who would have ever thought we would have a million dollar facility here in Hog Town. As more than 150 people gathered to celebrate yet another investment in the community, the parking became jammed packed and the overflow on the side of the road. Hopefully in the fall we will have an active Boys & Girls Club, but this is just another benchmark to help with the education and character development of our boys and girls, affirmed Chairman Swett. Rules and regulations, by-laws and contact information were distributed for the community members to be aware of the operations for the new building. Id like to thank the planning committee for all of their hard work to make this building possible, remarked District 2 Representative Councilor Louise Mitchell. After all commentary an honor song was sang by Southern Sun and Going Through Gospel Singers gave their rendition of a native gospel song.
