The teeth have little impact on the rope unless... the rope is constantly used to ascend or... a fall occurs on an ascender. The more impact force that is put on an ascender, the more the friction of the teeth will grab, the more damage they'll do.

The damage from the teeth is normally insignificant, as the teeth only grab the rope so the cam can pinch it.
