In 1987 members of the British Royal Family and celebrities participated in a charity benefit based on the BBC TV show "It's A Knockout!". This is the first contest of the day.

  • Can you upload the one where the people in the king costumes get stuck trying to get through the opening in the wall. That's my favourite bit of the whole tournament. And the one with everyone trying to catch the vegetables for the pot!

  • I have everything that was aired on American TV, which includes both those segments. Eventually I'll get it all uploaded.

  • Do you have the video where after this 'show' prince edward gets tetchy with one of the interviewers?

  • Unfortunately no. That wasn't aired in on the USA Network.

  • I wonder was it ridiculed as much in the US as it was in the UK? It was a national joke over here - at the royals' expense

  • I don't remember it getting much attention over here. Most people I've talked to about it have never heard of the event. I think it only aired once.

  • What the hell where they thinking!?

  • that would be a very silly and short sighted thing to do.

The benefit both politically, economically and socially is immense. A little research is necessary before promoting republican ignorance. I for one am certainly no Royalist, but the benefits for the minor amount the public contribute (around 60pence per annum) is unlike anything else in the world. you only need to look at the charity list, or global business impact that royal influence has to see their huge importance to Great Britain.

  • I can't believe no one clotheslined themselves on that rope.

    Disappointing. =(

  • Who thought this was a good idea?

  • 23 years on I'm still struggling to believe this actually happened.

  • @davedujour How the hell Prince Edward thought he would have a career in TV after this is jaw-dropping. Was this covertly funded by a Anti-monarchist Communist cabal or something? It might as well have been for the PR impact it had! Cringeworthy. I didn't know they had licenced it overseas too. Loads of Americans must have been thinking thank God for the Boston Tea Party!

  • I think England has so much more to offer than the Royal Family--English contribution to literature alone is worth so much--but I am personally a supporter of the Royal Family and see where you're coming from :)

  • Oh dear - this whole event is remembered as probably the most embarrasing moment for the royal family. Prince Edward came across as right little spoilt brat when he gave a press conference afterwards...

  • 10 months later and it is still not possible to tell.

  • I have it on tape.

  • @ 0.25 the grand knock out tournament is underway.

  • @ 0.23 "call out the guards" and we're off and running.
