Nitrogen Triiodide Detonation

A ring stand is set up with two rings, each holding a filter paper spread with nitrogen triiodide. The bottom filter paper is touched with a feather, causing an explosion that detonates the other sample of nitrogen triiodide. Close up views and slow motion of this very dangerous reaction are shown.

I found that it was dangerous though. One day I had left the filter papers on top of the kitchen refrigerator on a piece of newspaper. My father came to take something from it and when he smashed the door, the air moved the newspaper and all go BOOM! Then I found how chemistry could be dangerous making your father chase you all over the house....

The iodine stains on the white paint on the refrigerator reminded me about that story for years. Damn thing didn't want to get out easy.

@WillytheKid9423 When I was teenager I used to make it by mixing ammonia(25%) with ethanol solution of iodine. Reaction is pretty much instantaneous and you can start filtering the nitrogen triiodide immediately. The plus side was that you could buy both ammonia and iodine solutions from the drugstore.

@Rikudemyxdert When its wet you can mix it but the second it dries on the filter paper. I made it during free lab after the AP Chem test, its a lot of fun but takes a long time for the iodine crystals to dissolve in the ammonia though
