This helps prevents the cross contamination of dirty water from back feeding into the dishwahser unintentionally.

  • POWinCA the crap you just spewed is hurtful stop repeating what you have heard and take a simple physics class...WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The air gap is NOT there to "draw air from inside the home into the dishwasher." Water comes out of the dishwasher, flows up through the input tube, and spills out and down the output tube to the drain or garbage disposal. The "gap" is the space, i.e. the AIR, between one tube and the next. It has NOTHING to do with sewer gases. The air gap prevents sewer WATER from flowing back into the dishwasher if the drain clogs. It it clogs, the sewer water will flow out of the air gap into the sink.

  • This might be acceptable to you but not by city code in many states;you might get a big fine for trying to save spending a less than $10 gadget. Not a good idea to assume that every one lives at your neck of the woods where there are no inspectors.Use a air gap and do it right.

  • Proper yes, Healthy NO!!! the way it is done there is to most local plumbing codes. The proplem and you know it if you are a plumber; is that code is minimum! How many of you out here want something done to minimum standards? not me! Get an air gap for 15$ bucks and install it, it will allow air to be drawn in from inside the home into the dishwasher during certain cycles rather than possible sewer gas into the dishwasher. Im not saying it will draw air into the dishwasher im saying its possible

  • I've never seen this airgap stuff before I dunno anyone that has one only seen in videos here on youtube, my grandmother needs a new dishwasher and I think it has a hole drain underneath it with copper ring not 100% though, the sink has a water sprayer so would that have to be removed and the airgap put in it's place in the same hole the sprayer was in?

Sears told us they don't install dishwashers anymore and we'd need a plumber so I'm considering options.
