Stone was never a spy and stopped associating with KGB contacts after the invasion of Hungary and the revelations of Stalinist atrocities

he was also a great journalist who relied on his own initiative and broke stories uncovering the lies and deceptions of governments, all of which were very well sourced as he got them from official sources through the library of congress, government records etc.

This is an awful book. All DD Guttenplan seeks to do is show everyone how many useless names and boring tangents he can throw in one book. To think this guy go paid for writing this piece of crap is insulting. My life is worse for having read it.

journalists regularly speak with govt officials no shit

soviets had govt officials just like any other government and journalists from all over will want to talk to them to get interesting information for stories it's not surprising in the least

Stone wasn't 'with' Stalin he was a sympathiser at first but then he changed his views once he learned the truth - the same is true of many others at the time and him being a journalist obviously makes it a rational decision on his part to talk to Soviet officials etc. as, not surprisingly, many thousands of other journalists, many non-sympathisers, did over the course of the Soviet Union's history - that does not make them agents

Any American who was an agent of Stalin like the "journalist" I.F. Stone was is the most despicable type of human garbage imaginable, someone enjoying their freedoms in a democratic society while aiding one of the world's most brutal ever mass murderers oppress others.
