Berthe Sylva - C'est mon gigolo (L.Cassuci), Odéon 1929
Berthe Sylva (Berthe Faquet)(b.1886 in Brest - d. 1941 in Marseille). She was a chambermaid, who rose to fame in the 1920's in Paris, and was one of the great French "realist" singers alongside Edith Piaf, Suzy Solidor, Fréhel and the like. She was best known for her interpretation of "Roses Blanches", a song, which has become an enduring classic in the canon of French song. She was a generous personality, helping a number of up and coming singers find their audience. In the early 30's she launched the career of the then unknown Tino Rossi with an opening slot at the "Alcazar" casino on the French Riviera. She died in Marseille the beginning of WWII of the depression, the alcohol and starvation. Her dramatic interpretations will for ever denounce the misery, injustice, wounded childhood, the loss, disillusion and the sentimental failure.

To answer Barbcard, I think the man @1.43 is holding the lady's reticule or clutch-bag for her during their dance. What's in his hand appears to be made from the same eau-de-nil satin as the evening gown.

Do you think she was thinking of countryman Rudolpho Valentino when she sang this? I am.

So great to see Sylva presented here even if I'm not the biggest fan of her timbre and often excessive vibrato. Thank you for the wonderful visual presentation, congratulations!

That man at 1:43 is MY kind of gigolo, but what is he holding in his right hand white kid glove behind the lady's back? Also could go for the PERLA man, at least for a minute or so.
