Is an American Bully a Pitbull?

//American Bully - History//

About seventeen years ago I (Dave Wilson) started breeding to create the Razors Edge line I started with a foundation of the AKC registered Staffs, they carried the heavier builds, larger heads, and more mellow demeanors. We crossed in lines from UKC registered Pits to add more muscularity, more drive, and a harder look. After about seven years of blending and selective breeding, we came out with the look and personality that we were striving for. These dogs carried large blocky heads, short and square muzzles, full body muscularity, heavier bone structure, and just all around physically powerful builds. The personality was still to be stable and docile towards humans, but we also washed out a lot of the dog aggression that the original blood carried. In our minds we had created the ultimate companion dog.

These dogs had to be registered with the UKC, because it was the only registry that acknowledged all the spawns as the same breed. So we began competing in the UKC conformation shows. The dogs did very well and in time were given a slang name called Bullies. This name was given basically to describe their build and the thicker look of the style. In time, Bully bloodlines spawned all over the US.

Razors Edge was just one of many of the bully lines. Other bully lines that are popular are: Greyline, Gottiline, Gaff, Watchdog, Camelot, DeLaCruz, Butthead, Royal, Kaos, Gangus Kahn, and many more. Even the Razors Edge bloodline spawned into other Bully lines like Remyline and Shortyline. A new look and style had formed, and its popularity spread worldwide The Bullies had began to make their own name and place within the breed. The love for the Bullies spread way beyond the UKC conformation show world. In time, the show world pushed for a direction that did not favor the Bully style. This left a large group of extremely diverse people, who were left with nowhere to compete and show off their dogs.

In 2003, a concept for a new registry was created for the purpose of the promotion, registration, and competition of this style of the breed, the Bullies. Fanciers of the Bullies were already gathering in large numbers at BBQ style events. People from all over, and of all races would get together and host BBQ style events for the Bullies. This provided a more relaxed atmosphere, usually with DJs playing music, people barbequing , vendors selling Bully paraphernalia and gear; and breeders, owners, and fanciers of the dogs in the hundreds. These gatherings drew in large amounts of people, and especially Bullies.

A new registry was formed to accommodate these people and their dogs, so they had a way to compete with their style of dog. The registry decided to use the slang name already given to this style, Bullies; but, they also decided to add the name American to the title. This was to properly represent the nation of the breeds origin. The breed now was given the formal name, The American Bully. The kennel club registry used the name, The American Bully Kennel Club, or ABKC. Now the breed had a name, a registry, and a way to compete! The biggest part of the American Bully goes beyond the dogs, and is the life style surrounding the breed and events. The Bullies now have a following worldwide, and Expo style events for these dogs bring in spectators by the thousands. The Pit Bull has been part of the urban world for decades now, but the American Bully is making its name as a new face in this world. You can see them featured on CD covers, music videos, and even magazine such as this one, which was created for the breed and the lifestyle.
The main differences between the Pit and the Bully are hard to state as facts, because there are many different style to the Pit. So, we will us a general comparison using the generic form of the Pit. Basically, an every day back yard Pit Bull.

  • my point is while there is some discrepancy as to which breed is which but look at it this way when people say they arent related they all come from the wolf so in a sense they are all related but some of the dogs in this video are am bully some am staff and some APBT STAFF mix if any one you like the dogo argentino it has apbt in it along with mastif and somthing else cant remember at the moment but they are all great dogs

  • american bully can be traced to an am staff english bulldog mix thats why they are so short and have a shorte face than a apbt think about it american bullys are short am staff and pits arent if anything somtimes not all the time the pit in the genes will cause the dog to loose size my dog is a sharpei american bully mix i have videos on my pro he is stocky but also short then if u look up pit sharpei mixes they are alot taller

  • @zoomlao a good german rottweiler would take both not that i agree with dog fighting i think its terrible look up rottweiler vs pitbull fight the uploaders name is powergt300 and its a video to show how cruel dog fighting is and it actually shows a rottweiler i pure rott not these mutts that people call rotts fighting what looks like an am staff or apbt and kicks its ass i love all the breeds pits am staffs bullys but you cant deny the shear power of the rottweiler

  • The dogs are prettier then half these bitches

  • From what i know mr wilson said he bred apbt with staffys and also said the dogs he bred them to he doesnt really know for sure if they were mixed with mastiff or english bulldogs. But he does know that on papers they were either apbt or staffys. And already ppl will say those 2 dogs are they own breeds. I must say some bullies out there do look like american bulldogs and mistiff and bull terrier and stuff and some bullies probably do have those blood in them and some bullies are 100% apbt blood

  • Would ppl call a skinny Rottweiler a doberman? Or a long chihuahua a dashhound? I think NOT! The funny thing is AKC reconize the apbt as a staffordshire terrier. Now i can hear all those Staffy owners saying hell no those pits are NOT a stafford! My bully on paper is known as an apbt. To me they should be called Am. Bullies. Maybe in time the Kennel clubs will reconize these bullies but what if these bullies was all 100% apbt then what? They just beefier pits. Its all a mess.

  • Me personally will call my bully an american bully and my pit an apbt. Both are 7 generation "PR" papered from UKC. I know damn well my bully has apbt blood in it as i know damn well my apbt has bulldog and terrier blood in it. I just think the bully should be its own breed just like the staffordshire is its own breed. But some ppl will say a staffy is an apbt and some will say the bully is an apbt. There are a lot of dogs that looks like one another but are totally different breeds.

  • And yes i have seen an 80lb apbt which ppl will call it a bully, and i've seen a 30lb apbt which some might call it a Staffordshire terrier. I've also seen a 300lb chinese guy but u dont call him a japanese sumo, would u? Its hard to say i've seen a 100% apbt that looks like a freaking Labordor. The world will never know. But an Apbt was a mutt back in the days. And i bet the ppl who owned a bulldog and the ones who owed a terrier was like F those pitbulls at one point or another.

  • Let me Rain on all yall's parade! I own Both dogs an APBT and a Bully. I love both of them. The bully was not bred to be a fighting dog but it can and will F up some apbt but in the long run the bully will tire out and stop to catch their breathe and thats where the apbt game dog will punish the bullies. They wont last 2 minutes with a real game apbt. Bullies being 100% apbt is hard to say, only Dave Wilson can say. As u can see he started with a Staffy, now are Staffy an APBT?
