See, normally no more than seven fruits are displayed at any one time in the game, but when the internal level counter (stored in a single byte) reaches 255, the subroutine erroneously causes this value to "roll over" to zero before drawing the fruit. This causes the routine to attempt to draw 256 fruits, which corrupts the bottom of the screen and the whole right half of the maze with seemingly random symbols. Just thought I'd clear things up.

its becuase the game has a small glitch where it tries to show 256 fruits/keys at once, where it messes with the programming and voila! a split screen glitch, but I'm not quite sure what happened to the maze itself lost in that garbled mess

None of the programmers could get anywhere close to level 256. Unless you were sarcastic. It is hard to tell on the internet.

This was an age where everything was edited with text. They would have to write hundreds of lines of codes just to put in a level skipper not to mention putting it on the device memory, putting it into a cabinet and loading it just to see if there was a glitch in a level 00.001% of anyone would ever see.

No. Just the original arcade version. The various ports/rewrites for home systems and handhelds do not include this glitch.
