2003 Honda Element Front Brake Pad Change and Slider Pin lubrication

Note: After changing the pads, I pumped the brake numerous times to prime the brakes before they worked.

  • @deno1serr. You can probably reuse the old shims. I don't think it's necessary to hav shims, but you'll be at higher risk to having an annoying squeal sound

  • Thanks, big help. I replace my Element brakes today, but I made the mistake of removing the large 17mm bolts for the whole assembly and changing the pads that way, much harder and I couldn't get the wire springs back in, so I've been driving without them today. I'll pull them back off tomorrow and do it your way, looks a lot easier....

  • @737tech Those spring clips are annoying, if not careful, they bounce across the garage and it takes a while to find them!

  • Thanks for the video...I am going to give it a shot! Two questions: Where is the brake bleeder line/screw? What grit sand paper did you use to clean glazing?

  • @djmatthewsol Its going to be impossible to describe to you where the bleeder screws are at. All I can say is that if you're looking at the caliper, and follow the brake lines - the bleeder screw location becomes pretty obvious. The hole the fluid comes out is covered by a rubber cap. I think I used a medium grain sandpaper. Of course, the 'best' way to clean the glazing is to have them 'turned' with a machine. Dont forget to pump the brakes a bunch of times to prime the brakes after the change!

  • @djmatthewsol Sorry for the late reply. The bleeder bolt is on the caliper. It's a 10mm bolt which is on the base f the bleed port. The bleed port is covered by a rubber cap which you'll need to pull off.

  • hey i bought the crc disc brake quiet but i notice that i dont have those shims on my brake pads

do i need to used only if i have those shims or can i used without it ?.. thx

  • thank you vvery much!

  • Thanks. Just did this with my 2007. Did this many times with my old Civic but was happy to find this video for a refresher. This job was the back. My pads had pre-installed shims and the back had a little different clips on the caliper. It was an easy install. I had help from my 5yr old though ;-)

  • Mission accomplished! The rear's were slightly different than the front but I was able to figure it out quite easily. Strangely, the inner-rear factory pads did not have shims when I pulled them out. Thanks again for the video and answers to my questions. And YES, my vehicle stops really well now, with NO squeaks!
