"The time... some time around 1994, the place... a humble lodging house somewhere in the suburb of Seoul, Korea. The people living in 'suburb' of Seoul means people who dream of living and be part of the fancy city called 'Seoul' but which they can not afford to. So they only end up dreaming and looming around the bushes.
Hong-Shik has left his home and came to Seoul to earn money several years ago. He tries to do this and that but he seems to be failing in everything he does. Having run out of money, he borrows some from his homeland pal, Choon-Seop. But Hong-Shik seems to have forgotten about it. Thus Choon-Seop also comes to Seoul searching for Hong-Shik and his money. Choon-Seop pushes himself into Hong-Shik's humble lodging house and announces that he is staying until Hong-Shik pays back the money.
Choon-Seop does not like the way Hong-Shik is dealing with his life thus reins in with every bits of it making Hong-Shik sick and tired of living with him. Choon-Seop is a conservative and diligent young man who never wants more than he has worked for. On the other side, Hong-Shik only seeks after a 'good-luck' and he gets himself a job in a pub where he teaches dancing and flirts with rich married women.
Young-Sook is a pretty young girl living next door to the boarding house. She is also a dreaming girl who praises the fancy life of the fancy city. She is not at all satisfied with her 'less than ordinary' life. She admires Hong-Shik's charming out appearance and fall in love with him. She believes that he will one day be a prince and take her out of the gloomy life. However Choon-Seop falls in love with her at the first sight and keeps telling her that Hong-Shik is no the kind of man to succeed. He admonishes her that she has to wake up from a vain dream and accept his genuine love. But Young-Sook would not listen.
Hong-Shik knows Young-Sook's love but his vain ambition does not allow him to accept her love. He forgers a marriage with a rich married woman but the the things turn out badly and he comes to be chased by a couple of street gangs. He makes a plan to flee away from the gangs and his life with Young-Sook. But he gets killed right before the departure.
Choon-Seop, who realizes that Young-Sook will never wake up from her vain dream, gives his love to another sincere girl and they pursuit after a genuine and honest life."
