just running on the little teac home audio system. this is a sinewave test tone which runs from 1hz up to about 35hz. free air. just to show the excursion ability of this fine woofer. not as big excursion as current woofers, but this oldschool driver has 92db/1w sensitivity. it also has a real solid top plate on the motor which keep the coil cool, and keeps thermal compression down. woofer is a Cerwin Vega Stroker 12D2 (dual 2r vc). the motor still has more to offer. The surround is at its limit imo. maybe a modern surround will allow excursion increase of 5mm or more. Cerwin Vega at its best!

  • Be careful xmax for 12" Stroker is 23mm peak to peak, more than that may do damage

i think this was the maximum i could go with it:) i wouldnt have wanted to do any more. however, replacing the surround for a modern one will probably allow more excursion (non linear). the stroker 12 has an xmax and xlim very close together, and i think this is due to the surround limiting movement. i think the vc former still has more room for extra excursion. the stroker 15 shares the same motor structure and i have seen a stroker 15 with modified surround doing 1.5"p/p

  • Xlim is limited by the surround but the sub will still start to sound bad above 23mm peak to peak. A modified surround will not make any difference but the effective cone area may be smaller and the risk to damage the voicecoil will be higher. The Stroker 18" has longer excursion but it is still not so well suited for frequencies lower than 30Hz. It will work and maybe sound ok but the efficiency will drop very fast if you tune the box to low.
