For decades, Kenya's health care system has focused on battling malnutrition and communicable diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS, dubbed "diseases of the poor." But over the past few years, the country has seen a proliferation of so-called "lifestyle diseases" such as diabetes, heart disease and cancers. Experts attribute this to rising incomes, Western diets and less physical activity. Non-communicable diseases are putting tremendous pressure on the Kenyan health-care system.
