45 Seconds of fish flight! A world record?
_______________________________________
Captured on film off the coast of Japan, in what may be the longest recorded flight of the species.
The footage was shot on a ferry off Yakushima Island.
The flying fish was seen flying in parallel with the boat, which was moving at about 30km per hour.
The fish was able to continue flying by occasionally beating the surface of the water with its tail fin when it began to lose altitude.
According to Junji Yonezawa at the Center for Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries on Outlying Islands, the flight time of 45 seconds beats the previous record of 42 seconds reported by an American researcher in the 1920s.
There are some 40 species of "flying fish" in the family known as Exocoetidae. The animals are found worldwide in warmer waters.
Their flight ability comes from a glide rather than a powered flapping.

Why? If a flying fish can fly far enough to evade its predators now with a ten or twenty second flight why would it evolve the capacity to fly for five minutes? Evolution only occurs if there is a direct benefit for every step of the way. The selection pressure to evolve a few minutes worth of flight is not there so they will never get the opportunity to evolve the ability to fly for hours unless sexual selection kicks in to help them over that hump.
This is actualy a real species of fish called Exocoetidae, they are fish and havenothing to do with birds but the wings are like bug wings and when they are about to be eaten or attacked by another predetor they have the ability to hover above the water for a short period of time, the only reason why this clip is so amazing is due to the time it spent out of the water, that is one special fish!
You have people who can run faster then other people? So can that be same with fish? Untill i see him like flying around my city and crapping on people then he is a bird
Oh yes, true science, such as the world is flat, the sun revolves around Earth, talking snakes, etc. Yep, God did give us true science. Fuck people like Newton and Darwin, they're just no good liars.
