Let's be frank, you'd probably still call him a liar if he did swear. He goes and does one of the most amazing things a human could do and he's asked to swear it happened. First thing one hears is the implied "You're lying and I'm gonna catch ya".
On top of that, no one who thinks it was faked would've been swayed. They'd call him a liar just like they were already doing. And you and I would simply be debating if he was honest in his swearing on the bible.

@stbays He wouldnt even have to mention god, just put his hand on the bible and say i swear. And the amount of times priests and alikes do so, its not taking his name in vain. Its trying to cover your ass... sry dude.

If he really was a Christian, then he's probably like me then. I am a Christian and I wouldn't swear on a bible for anything, not even my name or who my mother is. It's just something we don't do. Sort of akin to taking the Lord's name in vain kind of thing, in my opinion any ways. I know a lot of Christians who are like me in this regard though.
Two, like I said, he could be Atheist and see no value in such an activity.

@stbays And you dont think its strange that he couldnt swear it to be true on the bible? It would probably have made a lot of christian non believers to start believing atleast.

DALLAS — A handwritten card containing a Bible verse that Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin planned to broadcast back to Earth during a lunar Holy Communion service is among items offered this week in a space-related auction.
Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, was asked not to read the verse publicly because of a legal challenge NASA faced from famed atheist Madalyn Murray O'Hair. He instead recited the verse during a private service with a communion kit furnished by his church

A year later, I know:
Did you consider back then that Aldrin might be Atheist? Maybe he didn't want to swear to something he felt was a lie. I wouldn't swear on the Koran or any other book from a faith I don't believe in.
On top of that, I doubt it'd have made any difference to people who believed it was a hoax. If he'd sworn on the bible, he'd still be called a liar. So why put himself out there for people he doesn't care about?
Excellent - and I sure will watch it in reverse to find out that secret message! :-)
