The second part of this investigative documentary looks at the historical evidence and recent scientific data that sea lice from fish farms cause massive die offs in wild salmon and appear to be responsible for the huge collapse of the Broughton runs in 2002. The documentary also takes a critical look at the part the Department of Fisheries has played in this collapse by its not conducting legitimate and thorough investigations and by its not enforcing the Fisheries Act which would have mandated removal of all fish farms having the potential to adversely affect wild salmon smolts. The DFO appears, then and now, with the aid of the industry friendly provincial government, to be purposely managing the B.C, wild salmon stocks into extinction much as they did the cod on the East Coast.
The pinks came back in high numbers this year because the juveniles from these runs passed fish farms without being infested with sea lice. The farms treated their Atlantic Salmon with pesticides to kill the lice before the young wild salmon migrated past. This adds even more support to the findings of research scientists and to the recommendations or the Provincial Aquaculture Inquiry that fish farms should be isolated from migrating juvenile salmon.
